Created by the United Nations Organization (UNO), World Environment Day, on the 5th of June, continues to be celebrated with initiatives for the planet’s sustainability worldwide. And this June 8 is the United Nations World Oceans Day, 2022 with the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”.
“The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all. Yet its health is at a tipping point and so is the well-being of all that depends on it. As the past years have shown us, we need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.”, UN highlights.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of World Oceans Day and alert the population about the importance of conscious attitudes, such as the urgent preservation of the seas and coastal ecosystems, a new edition of “Aquele Abraço” will take place globally. After more than two years of the pandemic, the event will be held simultaneously in Portugal (Carcavelos), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and the USA (San Diego). As a symbolic act, a beach cleaning action will also take place during the initiative.
In June 2019, more than 15,000 people gathered on the beachfront of Barra da Tijuca, Reserva and Recreio dos Bandeirantes beaches in Rio de Janeiro in the largest hand-in-hand beachfront hug and the largest beach cleanup collective so far. For this new edition, the expectation is that hundreds of volunteers will participate in the action only in Portugal, hugging the Ocean, along the 1.20 km of the beach. More than 5 thousand volunteers are expected in Copacabana, in Rio.
