Cities became ‘more liveable’, global index shows

September 11, 2024

City life saw a general improvement last year, with the most significant advancements occurring in Eastern Europe. According to the latest Global Liveability Index, Vienna was named the world’s most liveable city for the third consecutive year. Austria’s capital city received perfect scores 100 for stability, healthcare, education and infrastructure, but has room for improvement in culture and environment. European cities dominated the top 10, with Copenhagen and Zurich taking second and third places, respectively. London ranked 45th, while Honolulu, in 23rd place, was the highest-ranking US city.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) compiled the index and evaluates 173 cities based on five categories: stability, education, healthcare, culture and environment, and infrastructure. Despite a noted decline in stability and infrastructure, the paper reported improvements in healthcare and education in several cities within developing markets.

Western Europe maintained its status as the most liveable region, while Eastern Europe experienced the most substantial score increase. Although the overall index saw a slight rise, the EIU remarked that the improvement was minimal, hindered by geopolitical conflicts, civil unrest, and a housing crisis affecting many cities in the survey.

“Global liveability has risen fractionally over the past year but risks to stability remain. Still-high inflation accompanied by high interest rates and other economic headwinds led to another year of frequent protests across the world,” said Barsali Bhattacharyya, deputy industry director at EIU.
