With the rise of the hybrid working model, companies in various sectors have been finding ways to reduce their energy consumption and lower their carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable future. In recent years, the business world has witnessed a significant change in how organizations view the application of hybrid working, seeing it as a possible solution for preserving natural resources and the environment while continuing to provide their services.
This is what a recent survey conducted by IWG, a global leader in flexible workspaces, shows. The study, carried out in April 2024 by Mortar Research with 511 business leaders in the UK who work in a hybrid way, showed that companies implementing this model have managed to cut their energy consumption by up to 20%, resulting in significant environmental benefits.
In addition, 84% of the companies said that hybrid working was key to reducing their carbon footprint. With almost half of the companies surveyed reducing their office space by up to 25% due to adopting hybrid working, the economic and environmental benefits are even more evident.
A previous environmental impact study, conducted by IWG and Arup, found that working closer to home can reduce carbon emissions. The reductions were up to 70% in Manchester (UK), and, in the United States, 87% in Los Angeles, 82% in New York, and almost 90% in Atlanta, mainly due to decreases in emissions from the corporate slab and the transportation involved.
