Workation: the rise of a new trend

September 26, 2023

With the rise of remote work arrangements, ‘workations’ seem to be the trend of the hour. Essentially, it involves blending work responsibilities with a vacation experience. The concept of combining work and leisure in a new location has become more appealing to individuals and companies seeking to offer employees a flexible and enriching work environment.

According to a survey published by the Financial Times, 53% of Americans who are able to work remotely said they were interested in doing so at their vacation spot sometime in the next 12 months. The 18-34 age group showed the highest degree of interest. But as with any trend, the success of workations depends on individual preferences, work requirements, and the specific arrangements made.

Six reasons for taking a ‘workation’

  • Work-Life Balance

Workations allow individuals to blend work responsibilities with leisure activities, promoting a healthier work-life balance and reducing burnout.

  • Increased Productivity

A change of scenery can enhance focus, motivation, and overall productivity, especially if the new environment is less prone to the distractions of a traditional office.

  • Travel Opportunities

Workations enable individuals to explore new destinations, cultures, and experiences without taking extended time off from work.

  • Global Collaboration

Workations can facilitate collaboration between individuals and teams from different locations, enabling real-time interaction and idea exchange.

  • Family and Lifestyle Considerations

Workations can accommodate individuals with family responsibilities, as they allow for more flexible scheduling and the option to bring family members along.

  • Cultural Immersion

Working from a different location allows for deeper cultural immersion and a richer understanding of local customs and traditions.

It’s important to note that while workations offer numerous benefits, they also require careful planning to ensure that work responsibilities are fulfilled effectively and that the leisure aspect is enjoyed without compromising productivity. The success of a workation depends on finding the right balance between work and leisure, as well as addressing logistical considerations such as internet connectivity and work-related resources. Experts also alert that regulatory issues need to be addressed: tax liabilities if an employee exceeds a certain period of time at a location, immigration laws, insurance coverage and company protocols on safety.
